ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced a new measure to block mobile phone SIMs issued against expired Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs), in an effort to curb identity fraud and enhance digital security across Pakistan.
According to an official statement issued on Thursday, NADRA has begun coordinating with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and mobile network operators to implement the directive. The policy will be enforced nationwide and will apply to all individuals whose CNICs have expired and have not been renewed within a specified grace period.
“SIMs registered against expired CNICs will be automatically blocked to ensure that telecom services are not misused by individuals with invalid or outdated identification,” the statement said.
NADRA emphasized that the move aims to strengthen the integrity of the digital identity system and prevent unauthorized or criminal use of mobile phone numbers, which are often exploited in scams, frauds, and other illegal activities.
Officials clarified that the initiative is part of broader efforts to align Pakistan’s digital governance and security mechanisms with international standards. It also supports the government’s drive to crack down on unregistered and suspicious SIMs being used in financial fraud and terrorism-related activities.
Mobile users are being urged to check the status of their CNICs and renew them promptly through NADRA offices or online services. Telecom operators will notify affected users in advance through SMS alerts and other means before the SIMs are deactivated.
Industry experts have welcomed the step, calling it a necessary intervention to secure Pakistan’s digital ecosystem. However, they also cautioned that public awareness will be key to ensuring smooth implementation, especially in rural areas where access to NADRA offices and digital literacy remain limited.
NADRA has pledged to launch a nationwide awareness campaign to inform citizens about the policy and assist in the CNIC renewal process.
The policy is expected to be enforced in phases, with a deadline for compliance to be announced soon.
