ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a comprehensive alert for potential rain-related hazards and flooding in various regions of Pakistan.
The alert highlights a significant risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kumrat Valley, driven by ongoing heavy rainfall and unusually high temperatures. These conditions are increasing the chances of sudden flash floods, infrastructure damage, landslides, and disruption of public mobility in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, the accelerated melting of glaciers and snow due to rising temperatures, coupled with rainfall, has heightened the possibility of GLOFs. This could lead to rapidly rising river levels and flash floods, endangering transport and energy infrastructure in high-altitude areas.
In Azad Kashmir, heavy rains are forecasted and may cause flooding in low-lying zones, traffic blockages, and pressure on drainage systems.
In Punjab, including Murree, Galiyat, and central districts, widespread rain and thunderstorms may result in urban flooding, structural damage, power outages, and poor visibility affecting transport. Islamabad is also expected to face similar weather patterns within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Balochistan is likely to experience scattered rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds, which may impact visibility, electricity supply, and weak infrastructure.
In Sindh, heavy rainfall is predicted across major cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpur Khas, Tharparkar, Badin, Umerkot, and Jacobabad. These areas may see urban flooding, transport delays, and potential damage to power lines and buildings.
The NDMA urges the public and local authorities to stay vigilant and prepared.
