ISLAMABAD: In a major step toward digital transformation, the Government of Pakistan has announced the allocation of 2,000 megawatts (MW) of surplus electricity to support Bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. This move is part of a national strategy to monetize excess energy, draw foreign investment, and position Pakistan as a digital economy leader, according to a statement from the Finance Division.

Led by the Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC) under the Ministry of Finance, the initiative aims to convert underutilized energy assets into high-value digital infrastructure. Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb called the move a “pivotal moment” in Pakistan’s digital journey, highlighting its potential to attract innovation, investment, and international revenue.

The country’s geographic position between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, along with improved digital connectivity—bolstered by the recent arrival of the Africa-2 submarine internet cable—makes Pakistan an attractive destination for global Bitcoin miners and AI firms.

Bilal Bin Saqib, CEO of the PCC, emphasized the opportunity to generate USD-based foreign exchange through Bitcoin mining, while also accumulating digital assets in a national crypto wallet. The newly established Digital Assets Authority will regulate blockchain and crypto operations.

Pakistan’s broader plan includes building renewable-powered data centers and offering incentives like tax holidays and duty exemptions to encourage international partnerships. With a population of 250 million, including 40 million crypto users, Pakistan is poised to become a major regional hub for digital innovation in the coming years.
