PESHAWAR: A policeman was martyred and two others sustained injuries when explosive material stored in the Malkhana (evidence store) of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) police station in Peshawar exploded on Sunday.
According to SSP Operations Masood Bangash, the blast was likely caused by a short circuit that ignited the stored explosives. “Initial reports suggest the explosion occurred due to an electrical short circuit in the Malkhana,” he said.
The powerful explosion damaged a portion of the police station building, shattering windows and spreading panic in the surrounding area. Rescue teams and bomb disposal units immediately reached the scene, while the injured officers were shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mian Saeed confirmed that there was no evidence of an external attack. “After the incident, four accused present at the police station were safely shifted to another location,” he stated.
Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the blast and assess safety protocols for storing explosive materials in police facilities.
