ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said that “full efforts” are ongoing to resolve remaining issues between the United States and Iran, following high-level negotiations held in Islamabad over the weekend. Addressing the federal cabinet, he confirmed that the ceasefire between the two countries continues to hold, while diplomatic work is underway to achieve a lasting resolution.

Describing the Islamabad talks as a “historic moment,” the premier said Pakistan successfully brought both sides together for direct, face-to-face negotiations for the first time in decades. He noted that the American and Iranian delegations engaged in continuous discussions for 21 hours, reflecting the seriousness of the peace effort.

Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s role in transforming rising tensions into an opportunity for dialogue, stating that such breakthroughs often take time, citing examples like the Good Friday Agreement and the Geneva Accords. He emphasized that while progress has been made, unresolved matters are still being actively addressed through diplomatic channels.

The prime minister credited Pakistan’s political and military leadership for their tireless efforts in facilitating the talks and maintaining the ceasefire. He specifically praised Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir for their leadership and commitment to peace.

According to Sharif, Pakistan worked around the clock to ensure both sides remained engaged, even during moments when negotiations were close to collapse. He added that both the United States and Iran issued separate statements after the talks, expressing gratitude to Pakistan for hosting and mediating the dialogue.

The premier also revealed that he received congratulatory calls from global leaders, including his Japanese counterpart, as well as European officials, acknowledging Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in de-escalating tensions. He termed the talks a “moment of pride” for the nation, highlighting Pakistan’s growing role as a mediator in global conflicts.

A resolution passed by the federal cabinet also expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s opportunity to contribute to regional and global peace. As diplomatic engagement continues, Islamabad remains hopeful that ongoing efforts will lead to a comprehensive agreement between Washington and Tehran.
