ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Junaid Akbar has resigned from his position as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Akbar submitted his resignation to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, stating that he stepped down in compliance with party instructions. “I was given the PAC chairmanship on the direction of the party and I am resigning on its direction,” he said.

He added that he fully accepts PTI founder Imran Khan’s decisions and is even willing to resign from his National Assembly seat if instructed. “If Imran Khan asks, I will not hesitate to leave my NA seat as well,” Akbar remarked.

The resignation comes shortly after Imran Khan reportedly directed Junaid Akbar to vacate the PAC chairmanship, a move that signals internal restructuring within the party amid ongoing political developments.

Junaid Akbar Khan was elected as the PAC chairman on January 25, after a prolonged delay of nearly a year. The position had remained vacant following the February 2024 general elections, with PTI and the ruling coalition blaming each other for the stalemate.

The election was held following a demand from the government for a PTI-backed panel of candidates through the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), with Junaid Akbar and Adil Bazai proposed. Akbar’s nomination was put forward by PML-N’s Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and was unanimously accepted by the committee.

His sudden resignation marks another significant shift in the political landscape, following recent changes in PTI’s internal leadership, including the removal of Ali Amin Gandapur as the party’s KP president.

The PTI is expected to announce a replacement for the PAC chair in the coming days as discussions continue within the opposition-led committee.
