DOHA: Qatar has called for more time for ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran after former US President Donald Trump announced the suspension of a planned military strike on Tehran.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said diplomatic efforts currently underway should be given additional time to reach a peaceful solution. Speaking at a press conference in Doha, he praised Pakistan’s mediation role in bringing both sides closer to negotiations.

“We are supportive of the diplomatic effort by Pakistan that has shown seriousness in bringing parties together and finding a solution, and we do believe it needs more time,” Majed al-Ansari said.

The statement came a day after Donald Trump revealed that he had postponed a planned military attack on Iran following requests from Gulf leaders, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Trump stated that “serious negotiations” were now taking place and suggested there was a possibility of reaching a deal acceptable to all parties in the region.

According to international media reports, the planned strike was delayed after Iran reportedly submitted a revised peace proposal to Washington through Pakistani mediators. The proposal reportedly includes demands related to sanctions relief, regional security, and nuclear negotiations.

Trump also warned that the United States remained prepared to launch military action if an agreement could not be reached. However, he expressed optimism that diplomacy could still prevent further escalation in the Middle East.

The developments come amid rising tensions in the region over Iran’s nuclear programme and fears of wider conflict involving Gulf states and international powers. Qatar and other Gulf countries have repeatedly urged restraint to avoid instability that could threaten regional security and global energy markets.

Analysts believe the latest diplomatic push may provide a crucial opportunity for de-escalation after weeks of uncertainty and military threats. Pakistan’s reported involvement in facilitating communication between Washington and Tehran has also drawn international attention.

Despite ongoing negotiations, uncertainty remains over whether both sides can agree on key issues, including Iran’s nuclear activities and US sanctions. However, Qatar has stressed that dialogue remains the best path forward to avoid another major conflict in the Middle East.
