WASHINGTON: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrives in Washington today for a high-stakes visit, marking his first trip to the United States in seven years. President Donald Trump is set to give the 40-year-old leader an exceptionally warm reception.

As reported by Bureau Chief Jahanzaib Ali, the tone of this visit contrasts sharply with 2018, when the crown prince toured the US to promote his reform agenda. The killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi later that year sparked global backlash, leaving him isolated on the international stage.

Now, Mohammed bin Salman returns as a powerful regional figure and de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, increasingly influential in global politics and major investment circles — a presence American officials and corporations can no longer overlook.

President Trump will welcome him at the White House South Lawn at 11 AM (EST), a moment analysts say underscores Riyadh’s rising diplomatic stature.

“Five years ago, many in Washington avoided meeting him. Today he stands among the world’s most important leaders,” said Gregory Gause of Texas A&M University.

Saudi Arabia has since eased several conservative restrictions and expanded social freedoms, steps widely praised across the US. The crown prince’s main focus now is reshaping Saudi Arabia’s economy through his “Vision 2030” initiative.

During the visit, discussions are expected to cover enhanced defense ties, possible nuclear technology cooperation, joint AI ventures, and major investment projects.

Trump also hopes to push forward Saudi-Israel normalization, though experts stress that movement on Palestinian statehood remains a prerequisite.

Talks may include a potential US sale of F-35 fighter jets to Riyadh, despite concerns from American intelligence officials that advanced technology could reach China.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia continues strengthening ties with China and other global powers as Gulf states pursue long-term security partnerships amid shifting regional dynamics.

A few months ago, President Trump visited Saudi Arabia, exploring investment opportunities for the Trump Organization. Media reports suggest members of his family may pursue these business discussions further during the crown prince’s US visit.

While in the kingdom, Trump also toured the government-owned Diriyah development, where project officials confirmed ongoing talks about a Trump-branded property — raising fresh debate over the intersection of his political role and private business interests.
