ISLAMABAD: Former senator Mushtaq Ahmed, recently freed from Israeli detention, has officially joined the Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), a growing political alliance formed to safeguard Pakistan’s constitution.

After parting ways with Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), the party he represented in the Senate, Mushtaq met TTAP leaders Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Nasir Abbas on Saturday. The meeting focused on the political climate in Pakistan and the need for constitutional supremacy.

TTAP is a six-party alliance launched in April 2025. It includes Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), and Majlis-e-Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen (MWM), with Achakzai serving as its convener.

While an official announcement is expected soon, Mushtaq’s alignment with TTAP signals his continued political activism after his recent ordeal.

Mushtaq Ahmad Khan returned to Pakistan on October 9 via a private flight from Amman after being released from Israeli custody. He was detained while leading a five-member Pakistani team aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla — a civilian humanitarian convoy delivering aid to Gaza.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar had earlier confirmed Mushtaq’s release on social media, thanking all countries that supported Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts through its embassy in Jordan.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying food and medical supplies, consisted of over 40 boats and more than 500 peace activists, lawyers, and lawmakers. Mushtaq’s arrest was condemned across political lines in Pakistan.

The Foreign Office had coordinated with Jordanian authorities for his safe evacuation, while also warning of legal procedures that Mushtaq might face under Israeli law.

His decision to join TTAP indicates a shift toward a broader constitutional movement amid Pakistan’s tense political environment.
