KARACHI: Residents of several areas in Karachi will face temporary gas suspension during the night of May 16 and early morning of May 17 due to pipeline relocation work near the Nipa Flyover, according to Sui Southern Gas Company.
The announcement was made by Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC), which stated that the shutdown is necessary to complete technical work requested by Trans Karachi for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project near Nipa.
According to SSGC officials, the project includes the lowering and relocation of major heavy-pressure gas pipelines measuring 16 inches and 20 inches in diameter. The work is linked to ongoing infrastructure development along the BRT route and is aimed at ensuring safe operations in the area.
The scheduled gas shutdown will begin at 10:00 PM on Saturday and continue until 5:00 AM on Sunday. However, SSGC warned that due to the sensitive and technical nature of the operation, the maintenance work could extend until 8:00 AM.
The temporary suspension of gas supply is expected to affect both residential and commercial consumers in several key areas of Karachi. Major institutions likely to face disruptions include Liaquat National Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, and Karachi Central Prison.
Areas expected to experience gas outages include all blocks of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, PIB Colony, Jamshed Road, Lines Area, PECHS, and Saddar. Residents have been advised to take precautionary measures and manage their gas usage accordingly during the shutdown period.
The latest interruption comes as Karachi citizens continue to face routine gas load shedding across different parts of the city. Current SSGC schedules already include daily shutdown timings from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and again from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
The recurring gas supply disruptions have increased public concern over Pakistan’s ongoing energy crisis, especially in urban areas where residents and businesses rely heavily on natural gas for cooking and commercial operations.
SSGC has assured consumers that efforts are underway to complete the pipeline work as quickly as possible to restore normal gas supply across affected areas.
