KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting dust storms, gusty winds, and thunderstorms across various regions of the country from May 28 onward, as a westerly wave is expected to enter the upper parts of Pakistan.
According to the PMD, the incoming weather system may cause strong winds and thunderstorms, potentially affecting routine life and posing risks to crops, infrastructure, and travel. The westerly wave is forecast to persist in the upper and central regions for several days, bringing much-needed rainfall but also hazardous weather conditions.
The PMD stated that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are expected to experience scattered rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by windstorms and occasional hail, particularly in vulnerable areas.
In Balochistan and Sindh, dust-raising winds and isolated thunderstorms are also likely, especially in southern and southeastern regions. The department has warned of possible damage to loose structures, trees, and temporary shelters, urging citizens to take precautions.
The advisory noted that farmers should prepare accordingly, particularly those in wheat-harvesting regions, as strong winds and rainfall could delay harvesting and damage stored crops. Similarly, air and road travel may face disruptions, and power infrastructure could be affected due to lightning and wind damage.
The PMD has urged all relevant authorities to remain alert and prepared during the forecast period. The general public is advised to stay indoors during dust storms and thunderstorms, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure outdoor belongings.
Meanwhile, the expected rainfall may offer some relief from rising temperatures, especially in central Punjab and upper Sindh, where recent heatwave conditions have pushed daytime temperatures to uncomfortable highs.
The weather system is expected to gradually weaken by early next week, but PMD will continue monitoring and issue further updates as necessary
