WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has reiterated that multiple Indian fighter jets were shot down during the recent standoff between Pakistan and India, describing the situation as dangerously close to a nuclear conflict.
Speaking at the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agreement event, Trump claimed that five or six jets were destroyed and emphasized that he intervened to prevent a major war. “I don’t want wars; I want peace and trade. I even stopped a war between Pakistan and India,” he said.
Trump added that both nations were urged to prioritize economic cooperation over hostilities and praised their leaders for showing restraint. He also revealed that a peace deal with Russia is nearing completion and that meetings with President Putin and President Zelensky are planned, as both Russia and Ukraine seek resolution.
Meanwhile, tensions have emerged between the U.S. and India over recent American tariff measures. In response, India has moved to strengthen ties with Russia and China, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi planning his first visit to China in seven years and inviting Putin to India.
Bloomberg reported that Modi declined Trump’s dinner invitation on June 17, amid fears of a meeting with Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir, deepening the diplomatic rift.
