WASHINGTON: Donald Trump discussed a new proposal from Iran regarding the ongoing tensions with Iran during a meeting with his top national security aides on Monday, according to the White House.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the development while addressing reporters at a briefing. She said the discussion focused on a proposal that reportedly includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz for oil transit, while delaying detailed negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program to a later stage.

Leavitt refrained from giving a clear position on the proposal but emphasized that President Trump’s key demands remain unchanged. She reiterated that the US administration wants uninterrupted access to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route, and is also pressing Iran to hand over its enriched uranium as part of any potential agreement.

“I wouldn’t say they’re considering it. I would just say that there was a discussion this morning that I don’t want to get ahead of, and you’ll hear directly from the president on this topic,” Leavitt told reporters.

The Strait of Hormuz holds significant importance in global energy markets, as a large percentage of the world’s oil supply passes through it. Any disruption in this region often impacts international oil prices and economic stability.

The reported Iranian proposal comes at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with ongoing concerns over nuclear development and regional security. Analysts believe that reopening the Strait of Hormuz could help ease immediate economic pressures, but delaying nuclear negotiations may remain a contentious issue for the United States.

While no formal decision has been announced, the discussion signals a possible diplomatic opening between the two sides. Observers are now awaiting further statements from President Trump, which could clarify the US stance on the proposal and outline the next steps in US-Iran relations.
