BEIJING: U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking the first visit by a U.S. president to China in nearly a decade. The Trump China visit has drawn global attention as the two world leaders prepare to discuss trade relations, artificial intelligence cooperation, Taiwan tensions, and the ongoing Iran conflict.

Trump landed in Beijing with a delegation of top American business leaders, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The visit highlights Washington’s push to strengthen economic ties with China while securing business opportunities for major U.S. companies. Trump said he would urge Xi Jinping to “open up” China to American businesses and reduce restrictions on technology exports and investments.

The summit comes at a sensitive moment for U.S.-China relations. Although both countries agreed to a temporary trade truce last year, tensions remain over tariffs, semiconductor exports, and Taiwan arms sales. Nvidia has reportedly faced difficulties obtaining approval to sell advanced H200 AI chips in China due to strict regulations and ongoing technology disputes between Beijing and Washington.

Ahead of Trump’s arrival, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held lengthy talks with Chinese officials in South Korea to prepare for the Beijing summit. Chinese state media described the discussions as constructive and focused on maintaining stability in bilateral trade and investment.

During the two-day visit, Trump is expected to attend a state banquet, tour the historic Temple of Heaven, and participate in formal meetings at the Great Hall of the People. Analysts believe the discussions could influence global markets, trade policies, and geopolitical stability.

The Trump Xi Jinping meeting is also expected to address China’s role in the Iran war and U.S. military support for Taiwan. Beijing has repeatedly opposed American arms sales to Taiwan, while Washington insists on supporting the island’s defense capabilities.

Political analysts say Trump hopes the summit will boost his domestic approval ratings ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. Meanwhile, China aims to secure relief from American restrictions on advanced chipmaking equipment and semiconductor technology.
