KARACHI: A major maritime incident was reported near Karachi Port after two cargo vessels accidentally collided in open waters, causing several containers to fall into the sea. According to port authorities, the collision took place between MV Neva and MV Pappo in the anchorage area outside Karachi Port during the late hours of the night.

Officials confirmed that despite the accident, no casualties or injuries were reported. Authorities immediately launched rescue and inspection operations following the ship collision near Karachi. The vessel MV Neva was later shifted safely and berthed at berth number 5 for technical inspection and clearance procedures.

Chairman of the Karachi Port Trust, Shahid Ahmed, stated that the collision appeared to be accidental, and an inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the incident. Maritime authorities are currently reviewing navigation records, communication logs, and weather conditions to identify whether negligence or technical issues contributed to the accident.

According to initial reports, several containers from MV Pappo fell into the sea after the impact. Port officials said efforts are underway to assess environmental risks and recover the containers from the water. Shipping operations at Karachi Port, however, continued without major disruption after the incident.

The ship collision near Karachi has once again highlighted the importance of strict maritime safety protocols and vessel traffic monitoring in Pakistan’s busy sea trade routes. Karachi Port remains one of the country’s largest commercial gateways, handling a significant portion of Pakistan’s imports and exports.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s maritime sector recently achieved another milestone as Gwadar Port successfully handled one of the largest deep-draft cargo vessels in its history. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that the vessel MV BI JIA SHAN, arriving from Hong Kong and China, carried more than 53,000 metric tons of steel billets to Gwadar Port.

The minister said the successful berthing of the 12.8-metre draft vessel demonstrated Gwadar Port’s growing capability in handling large international cargo ships, strengthening Pakistan’s position in regional trade and maritime connectivity.
