UK: The United Kingdom is set to host high-level talks with around 35 countries to discuss reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as global concerns grow over disrupted oil supplies and rising energy prices. The meeting comes amid escalating tensions in the region following recent military developments.

The virtual meeting will be chaired by Yvette Cooper in London and will include participation from key nations such as France, Germany, Italy, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. Notably, the United States is not expected to attend the discussions.

The talks follow remarks by Donald Trump, who stated that ensuring access to the Strait of Hormuz should be the responsibility of nations that depend on it. He suggested the waterway could reopen “naturally” and urged other countries to take initiative in securing it.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical النفط shipping route, carries nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil consumption. Iran has effectively blocked the passage in response to US-Israeli strikes earlier this year, causing significant disruption in global energy markets and pushing oil prices higher.

Keir Starmer emphasized that the meeting will explore all diplomatic and political options to restore freedom of navigation once a ceasefire is achieved. He acknowledged that reopening the waterway would be challenging and require coordinated international efforts.

European countries had initially resisted calls to deploy naval forces due to fears of escalating the conflict. However, rising energy costs and economic concerns have prompted renewed urgency to form a coalition aimed at reopening the crucial route.

Officials indicated that initial plans would focus on clearing naval mines from the Strait, followed by measures to ensure the safety of oil tankers. Further technical and military-level discussions are expected in the coming weeks.

The outcome of these talks could play a significant role in stabilizing global oil markets and ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies worldwide.
