WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said there has been “a little bit of movement” in ongoing negotiations with Iran, raising cautious hopes for progress in efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Sweden, Rubio said there had been “slight progress” in discussions related to the Iran conflict and nuclear negotiations. However, he avoided sounding overly optimistic, noting that significant challenges still remain before any agreement can be reached.

The remarks come amid growing international concern over regional instability, the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, and security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route. Diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Iran, and regional mediators have intensified in recent weeks as fears of renewed military escalation continue to rise.

Rubio said the administration of President Donald Trump still prefers a diplomatic solution but warned that alternative options remain available if negotiations fail. According to reports, the United States is closely monitoring Iran’s activities in the Gulf region while continuing indirect talks aimed at preventing further conflict.

The US secretary of state also criticised Iran’s reported proposal involving shipping tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, calling the idea problematic for international trade and regional stability. The strategic waterway handles a major portion of the world’s oil shipments, and any disruption could significantly impact global energy markets.

Recent reports suggest Pakistan and other regional countries are actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to help bridge differences between Washington and Tehran. Pakistani officials have reportedly held meetings with Iranian leadership as part of wider mediation efforts aimed at achieving de-escalation and long-term peace.

Despite the cautious signs of progress, officials on both sides acknowledge that major disagreements remain unresolved, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions, and regional security concerns.

Analysts believe the coming days will be critical in determining whether the current diplomatic momentum can lead to a broader agreement or whether tensions between the United States and Iran could escalate further.
