LAHORE: President Asif Ali Zardari called for strengthening relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh, urging both nations to work together for mutual prosperity and healing historical wounds.
He made these remarks while addressing a reception hosted in honour of the Pakistan and Bangladesh cricket teams at the Governor's House in Lahore. Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi were also present at the event. President Zardari met players and officials from both sides, shaking hands and acknowledging their performances.
The president lauded the Pakistani cricket team for its performance in the ongoing series and appreciated Bangladesh’s team for visiting Pakistan as ambassadors of goodwill. “The Bangladeshi players have displayed high-quality cricket and contributed to the spirit of sportsmanship,” he said.
Reflecting on the historical context, President Zardari shared his personal connection to the past. “I belong to the generation that witnessed the separation. Today’s generation cannot feel that pain, but we must work to heal those wounds,” he remarked.
He praised the resilience and progress of Bangladesh, noting that it is now seen globally as a successful nation. “Just like Pakistan, Bangladesh is blessed with natural resources. We must create opportunities for cooperation and development between the two countries,” he added.
President Zardari emphasized the importance of people-to-people contact, especially among the youth. “The younger generations must connect more deeply. Sports, particularly cricket, can serve as a powerful bridge to bring our nations closer,” he stated.
He concluded by expressing hope that this spirit of goodwill would pave the way for broader collaboration in trade, culture, and education, helping both countries move toward a more prosperous future.
