ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing a solemn ceremony at the Pakistan Monument on Friday, declared victory in the recent military conflict with India, while extending an olive branch for long-term peace in the region.
The event marked Youm-i-Tashakur (Thanksgiving Day), celebrating Pakistan’s success in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, launched in response to Indian aggression following the Pahalgam attack. The confrontation saw deadly airstrikes and missile exchanges, ultimately leading to a US-brokered ceasefire earlier this week.
“We have won the war, but we seek peace,” said PM Shehbaz. “We taught the enemy a lesson, but we do not glorify war. We want to live as peaceful neighbours and work for prosperity in South Asia.”
The ceremony began with Quran recitation, followed by national songs and a military flypast. It was attended by top civil and military leadership, including Army Chief Gen Syed Asim Munir and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu.
Recalling the tense night of May 9, PM Shehbaz revealed a high-level meeting was held where a measured but decisive response was agreed upon after India launched ballistic missiles. He authorized the counterstrike that night, which he said stunned the enemy and earned Pakistan the upper hand.
“Our armed forces acted with precision and professionalism. From the US to Japan, our military’s prowess is being praised,” he said.
PM Shehbaz emphasized that while Pakistan emerged stronger, the conflict brought suffering to both sides. “Wars solve nothing,” he noted. “Only through dialogue can we address core issues like Jammu and Kashmir and water sharing.”
He urged India to move forward through peace, trade, and cooperation. “Permanent peace demands permanent solutions,” he said.
Earlier in the day, gun salutes and special prayers were held nationwide. In his statement, the PM praised the bravery of the armed forces, noting their actions had written a “golden chapter” in military history
