ISLAMABAD: The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced the sighting of the Muharram-ul-Haram moon on Thursday, marking the beginning of the Islamic year 1447 AH. The new Islamic year will officially commence on Friday, June 27.

As per the lunar calendar, the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, will fall on Sunday, July 6. This significant religious day is observed with solemnity and reverence by Muslims across Pakistan and the world, particularly in remembrance of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at Karbala.

The moon-sighting announcement was made by the committee’s chairman, Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabeer Azad, after a meeting convened at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Quetta. The session was attended by officials from the Pakistan Meteorological Department and SUPARCO (Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), ensuring the use of both religious and scientific observations.

The confirmation sets the dates for religious observances and public holidays related to the Islamic month of Muharram, one of the four sacred months in Islam.

Muslims across the country are now preparing for the holy month, which includes mourning processions, majalis, and other rituals leading up to Ashura.
