Bollywood Actor Imran Khan Arrested at Mumbai CJP Protest

MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Imran Khan was arrested by Mumbai Police on October 10 during a demonstration organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Kranti Maidan, according to Indian media reports.

The 43-year-old actor shared a sarcastic selfie from inside a police vehicle following his arrest. The photograph, posted on social media, carried the caption, “I’m going for a drive.”

Imran Khan has frequently spoken out on social and political issues, including police violence against students and concerns relating to the arts and politics.

Mumbai Police officials reportedly said that the organisers had not obtained official permission for the October 10 demonstration. Court rulings have identified Azad Maidan as the designated location for protests in Mumbai.

However, CJP activists claimed they had emailed the police seeking authorisation but received no response.

The demonstration is part of a wider campaign by the CJP demanding the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner over alleged manipulation of electoral rolls.

According to Indian media reports, disagreements have emerged within the Election Commission over electoral records. The reports also stated that officials had raised objections to 14 decisions made by the Chief Election Commissioner over the past ten months.

The political controversy has drawn attention to demands for greater transparency in India's electoral processes.

Meanwhile, reports linked the wider protest movement in New Delhi to the detention of numerous political figures and activists, including references to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The circumstances surrounding the reported arrests and the allegations concerning electoral records remain central to the controversy.

The CJP has continued to press for accountability and changes in the electoral system, while the reported police action against demonstrators has added another dimension to the dispute.
