Karachi: To ensure a clean and hygienic environment during Eid-ul-Azha, municipal authorities across major cities including Karachi and Rawalpindi have launched large-scale, coordinated sanitation operations.

In Karachi, Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab chaired a high-level meeting at the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), ordering a strict five-day cleanliness campaign with “zero tolerance” for negligence. He directed all officials to ensure timely garbage collection, particularly animal waste, and to resolve public complaints immediately.

The city’s 1128 Complaint Center will operate 24/7 throughout the festival, with details of complaint centers and garbage collection points shared via official social media platforms. Trucks transporting waste are required to use tarpaulin covers and avoid overloading; any littering during transport will result in fines.

City wardens will assist the SSWMB in the operation, and limestone powder and disinfectants will be applied at collection points. Road washing and soil removal have also been mandated to prevent foul smells and health hazards.

Managing Director SSWMB Tariq Ali Nizamani informed that around 100 collection points will be set up across Karachi. Waste bags will be distributed to citizens, and vehicles along with staff attendance will be verified before Eid. Additionally, green belts and parks will be provided with free soil upon request from Town Municipal Committees (TMCs).

Wahab also urged sanitation contractors to stop wall chalking and instead display positive messages during the holy occasion.

Meanwhile, the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) has finalized its plan to handle sanitation across the division, covering 6 districts, 22 tehsils, 407 union councils, and 2,444 villages. CEO Rana Sajid Zafar stated that over 11,600 workers and nearly 2,800 vehicles will participate, supported by 73 permanent and 168 mobile transfer stations. All staff leaves have been cancelled.

In Wah Cantonment, a digital monitoring system has been activated for Eid cleanliness efforts. Cantonment Executive Officer Imran Khan announced that area inspectors will manage operations, and complaints will be digitally logged and tracked, with third-party verification.

He urged residents to use communal slaughter points and refrain from dumping remains in drains or forests. Leaves of all sanitation staff have been cancelled to ensure a continuous cleanup drive.
