KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested seven suspects in Karachi for allegedly operating a human trafficking and visa fraud network that promised to send people to Europe in exchange for large sums of money.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, FIA Anti-Human Trafficking Cell Deputy Director Muhammad Ajmal said the suspects were arrested during a raid in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area. According to the agency, the group had been running the alleged operation for nearly five years under different business names while operating from a rented office.
The FIA said the suspects targeted individuals seeking overseas employment and immigration opportunities, particularly those hoping to travel to European countries. Victims were allegedly charged between Rs800,000 and Rs1 million with promises of work visas and employment abroad.
Investigators revealed that the group used fraudulent methods to convince applicants that their visa applications were being processed. However, when victims demanded updates or questioned delays, the suspects allegedly resorted to intimidation.
According to FIA officials, members of the gang reportedly wore fake police uniforms to threaten and silence victims who sought refunds or questioned the status of their applications. Authorities believe the tactic was used to discourage complaints and maintain the fraudulent operation.
During the raid, the FIA recovered hundreds of passports, laptop computers, weapons and police uniforms from the suspects' possession. The seized material is expected to play a key role in the ongoing investigation into the alleged network.
Officials said at least 52 victims have so far been identified, while further investigations are underway to determine whether more people were defrauded. The agency is also examining the gang’s financial records and possible links to other organised human trafficking networks.
The FIA has urged the public to verify the credentials of immigration consultants and recruitment agencies before making payments for overseas jobs or visa services. Authorities also encouraged anyone affected by similar scams to report the matter immediately.
The latest arrests highlight the FIA’s ongoing efforts to crack down on human trafficking, visa fraud and illegal immigration networks operating across Pakistan. Investigations are continuing to identify additional victims and any accomplices connected to the alleged scheme.
