K-Electric Shares 4 Steps to Update CNIC for Tax Exemption
KARACHI: K-Electric (KE), Karachi’s electricity distribution company, has advised consumers to update their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) and mobile phone numbers in its records to qualify for an exemption from advance income tax on electricity bills, subject to applicable tax rules.

In a social media post, the power utility shared a simple four-step procedure to help customers update their personal information through its official website.

Under the government’s tax framework, a 7.5% advance income tax applies to monthly electricity bills exceeding Rs25,000 for residential consumers who are not included in the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Active Taxpayers List (ATL).

Consumers have been encouraged to ensure that their information is accurate and up to date to avoid unnecessary tax deductions where an exemption is applicable.

Four steps to update CNIC details

Step 1: Visit the K-Electric website

Consumers should visit the official K-Electric website at ke.com.pk to access the customer services portal.

Step 2: Select ‘Update Customer Details’

On the homepage, customers need to locate and click on the “Update Customer Details” option to access the information update facility.

Step 3: Enter CNIC and mobile number

Consumers must provide their valid 13-digit CNIC number along with their primary mobile phone number in the designated fields.

Step 4: Submit the request

After entering the required information, customers should click the “Submit” button to complete the update request.

The initiative aims to facilitate consumers by simplifying the process of updating customer records and helping eligible individuals obtain applicable tax relief.

FBR issues directions on salaried taxpayers

Separately, Federal Board of Revenue Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial has reportedly directed tax officials not to issue advance income tax notices to salaried individuals whose sole source of income is their salary.

According to sources, the instructions aim to provide relief to employees who have received quarterly demands for advance tax payments.

However, salaried individuals earning additional income from other sources may still be required to pay adjustable advance income tax, depending on their circumstances and applicable tax regulations.

Advance tax paid by eligible taxpayers is adjusted against their final tax liability in accordance with the relevant provisions.

The developments come amid growing concerns about the tax burden on salaried individuals and calls for a fairer distribution of taxes across different income groups.
