CHAKWAL: At least 109 people have lost their lives and 745 others have been injured in Punjab since June 25 due to record-breaking rainfall, according to Rescue 1122. The intense monsoon downpour has led to widespread urban flooding, collapsed infrastructure, and landslides across the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited flood-affected areas in Chakwal on Friday and conducted an aerial survey to assess the scale of the devastation. She reviewed damage to homes, roads, and bridges, and issued immediate directives for relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts.
During the visit, CM Maryam also inspected the heavily damaged Dhuman Bridge on the Jhelum-Sohawa Road, a vital route connecting Chakwal and Jhelum. She ordered authorities to accelerate repair work and reopen the bridge for light traffic within two days using a temporary steel structure.
At a briefing held at the Chakwal Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the Chief Minister announced financial compensation for families affected by the disaster. She confirmed that families of individuals who died due to roof collapses or landslides would receive Rs5 million in compensation. Four families in Chakwal, specifically affected by landslides, will be granted Rs1 million each.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the government is fully mobilized to address the crisis and will ensure quick restoration of infrastructure and support for affected citizens. Emergency response teams and local administrations remain on high alert as further rainfall is expected in coming days.
