KARACHI: Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif on Thursday emphasised the vital role of students in countering misinformation and defending Pakistan in the digital era, during an interactive session with youth enrolled in the Saylani Welfare Trust’s IT programme in Karachi.

Addressing a hall full of aspiring tech professionals, Lt Gen Sharif said that in today’s world, wars are not only fought on the battlefield but also in the domain of narratives, social media, and cyberspace. “We are in the middle of a fifth-generation and hybrid war, where the battle is being waged through information,” he remarked. “And in this war, students are on the frontline.”

The DG ISPR explained that misinformation, propaganda, and digital manipulation are key tools used by hostile elements to create confusion, spread distrust, and undermine national unity. He urged students to remain vigilant, responsible, and informed in their digital engagements, saying, “Every tweet, post, and share can either support national cohesion or hurt it.”

Highlighting the power of technology, Lt Gen Sharif praised the Saylani IT programme for equipping young Pakistanis with essential skills. He noted that Pakistan’s youth — the country’s greatest strength — have the ability to shape narratives and project a positive image of the country globally.

“The future of Pakistan lies in the hands of its youth. You are the digital defenders of your country. Your tools are knowledge, truth, and technology,” he said, encouraging the students to use their skills for national progress and social responsibility.

During a Q&A session, students asked questions about the evolving nature of warfare, the role of media, and national security challenges. Lt Gen Sharif encouraged critical thinking and assured the youth that the armed forces stand with them in building a strong, stable, and informed Pakistan.

The session concluded with a call to unity, awareness, and responsible digital citizenship, with the DG ISPR urging students to always stand on the side of truth and Pakistan.
