KARACHI: Karachi’s e-challan monitoring system has uncovered a case of vehicle identity fraud after a citizen reported receiving fines for traffic violations committed by a car that did not belong to him.
According to police, the complainant received two e-challans of Rs10,000 each within a span of 13 days. The citizen stated that while the number plate displayed in the violation images matched his own, the vehicle caught on camera was not his. He explained that his registered car is a 2015 model, whereas the vehicle shown in both e-challans is a 2012 model.
The first challan was issued on October 30, alerting the citizen to the issue. A second challan, also for Rs10,000, arrived on November 12 and displayed the same vehicle with his number plate. The matter was immediately reported to the police, who took prompt action.
Officials said the vehicle was entered into the tracking database using modern surveillance systems. E-challan images show two different individuals driving the car during the violations. Both infractions were recorded at Karachi Toll Plaza on the M-9 Motorway and were issued for seatbelt violations. One image shows two occupants in the vehicle, while the other depicts a lone driver.
Police acknowledged that a significant number of vehicles with fake or duplicated number plates are operating in Karachi. They added that although such incidents create serious inconvenience for law-abiding citizens, the city’s advanced monitoring and e-challan system is increasingly helping authorities identify and take action against offenders involved in fraudulent vehicle activity.
