TURKY: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has issued a strong warning against turning the Black Sea into a zone of confrontation, following a recent Russian air strike that damaged a Turkish-owned vessel in Ukraine’s Odesa port.

Speaking to reporters aboard his plane on Saturday, Erdogan emphasized that safe navigation in the Black Sea is essential for all countries and that escalating hostilities in the region would benefit neither Russia nor Ukraine. His remarks come amid increasing tensions in the strategic waterway, which serves as a vital corridor for Ukrainian grain exports and Russian energy supplies.

The incident occurred on Friday when a Russian air strike targeted the port of Odesa, damaging a Turkish-owned ship. The attack took place just hours after Erdogan raised concerns directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a summit in Turkmenistan, highlighting Turkey’s active diplomatic role in mediating the conflict. Erdogan stressed the importance of a “limited ceasefire” specifically focused on protecting ports and energy infrastructure, reiterating Turkey’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Black Sea.

“Like all other actors, Mr Putin knows very well where Turkiye stands on this issue,” Erdogan said, adding that Turkey hopes to also discuss peace initiatives with US President Donald Trump. “Peace is not far away, we can see it,” he added, signaling optimism about ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region.

Turkey has positioned itself as a key mediator between Moscow and Kyiv throughout the war, controlling the Bosphorus Strait—a crucial chokepoint for shipping grain from Ukraine and oil from Russia to the Mediterranean and beyond. Ankara has consistently urged both sides to prevent the conflict from spilling over into maritime routes, emphasizing the global importance of uninterrupted shipping.

In recent weeks, several attacks have targeted Russia-linked tankers in the Black Sea, including drone strikes claimed by Ukrainian forces. These incidents have prompted Ankara to summon envoys from both Russia and Ukraine, expressing its concern over violations that threaten regional security. Erdogan’s warning underscores Turkey’s proactive stance on safeguarding maritime commerce while promoting dialogue and conflict resolution between the warring parties.

With rising geopolitical stakes in the Black Sea, Erdogan’s call for restraint aims to prevent escalation and ensure the continued flow of critical supplies to global markets. Analysts say Turkey’s role as a neutral but influential mediator could prove pivotal in advancing ceasefire negotiations and stabilizing the region’s security environment. Turkey’s diplomatic interventions, combined with its strategic control of key maritime routes, make Ankara a central actor in efforts to prevent the Black Sea from becoming a battlefield in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Erdogan’s comments come at a time when international attention is increasingly focused on maintaining peace in key maritime corridors and supporting sustainable solutions to the ongoing conflict.
