WASHINGTON: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday at the White House, according to intelligence sources. The meeting will take place at 10 PM Pakistan Standard Time in the White House Cabinet Room, coinciding with Munir’s official visit to the United States.
During his stay, Munir addressed the Pakistani diaspora in Washington, highlighting their crucial contributions to Pakistan’s economy and global standing through remittances, investments, and achievements in various fields.
This visit carries significant weight amid recent regional tensions. The Trump administration played a key role in brokering a ceasefire between Pakistan and India following last month’s violent clashes triggered by the Pahalgam attack in Indian-administered Kashmir. The 87-hour conflict involved cross-border strikes and resulted in civilian and military casualties on both sides. Pakistan’s military response included downing six Indian jets in retaliation. The ceasefire, brokered by the U.S., ended hostilities on May 10.
Beyond the ceasefire, Trump has offered to mediate the long-standing Kashmir dispute. Pakistan has launched diplomatic efforts, led by former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, to present its position internationally and counter India’s narrative.
The visit also occurs amid escalating Middle East tensions between Israel and Iran. Additionally, counterterrorism cooperation remains a vital part of Pakistan-U.S. relations. U.S. Central Command Chief General Michael Kurilla praised Pakistan as an “exceptional ally” in combating terrorism, including efforts against Daesh-Khorasan and the arrest of a key terrorist responsible for the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing in Kabul.
