ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) has firmly rejected allegations made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding the involvement of Pakistani nationals in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In a social media post on Monday, President Zelensky alleged that Ukrainian troops stationed in the northeastern region of the country were encountering foreign “mercenaries” from several nations, including Pakistan, China, and African countries.

Responding to these claims, the FO issued a statement on Tuesday, calling the accusations "baseless and unfounded." It clarified that no official communication or evidence had been received from Ukrainian authorities to support the assertions.

“To date, Pakistan has not been formally approached by Ukraine, nor has any credible evidence been shared to back such claims,” the FO stated.

The Foreign Office also noted that Pakistan intends to address the matter with Ukrainian officials and will seek a formal clarification. Reiterating its long-standing position, Pakistan emphasized its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, in line with the United Nations Charter.

The Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022, following an invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Pakistan has consistently denied any involvement, particularly regarding the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, during his visit to Islamabad in July 2023, also dismissed rumors of arms deals between the two countries, affirming there were no agreements in place.
