ISLAMABAD: The federal government has notified a significant increase in gas tariffs, raising fixed charges by 50% and revising rates across non-residential and institutional categories, effective immediately.

According to a notification issued Sunday by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), fixed charges for protected domestic consumers have gone up by Rs200, from Rs400 to Rs600, while non-protected consumers now face fixed charges ranging from Rs1,500 to Rs3,000, depending on consumption levels.

The protected category refers to domestic consumers whose average gas use over the winter months (November–February) is 0.9 hm³ or less. Those exceeding this threshold fall under the non-protected category.

Revised Gas Tariff by Category:

  • Government institutions, hospitals, educational entities: Rs3,175 per MMBTU

  • Commercial consumers: Rs3,900 per MMBTU

  • General industry: Rs2,300 per MMBTU

  • Captive power producers (own electricity generation): Rs3,500 per MMBTU

  • CNG stations: Rs3,750 per MMBTU

  • Tandoors (bread ovens): Rs110–Rs700 per MMBTU (usage-based)

The hike aims to offset rising energy costs and manage the gas sector’s circular debt. However, it is likely to increase the burden on households, businesses, and institutions already grappling with inflationary pressures.
