KARACHI: Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori has proposed an innovative and culturally rich initiative to issue free vehicle number plates featuring the iconic Ajrak design for citizens across the province. The proposal, aimed at celebrating Sindh’s heritage while providing a public benefit, was announced during a media briefing at Governor House.

Governor Tessori said the initiative seeks to promote regional identity and pride through the widespread use of Ajrak-themed number plates, which will be offered to the public at no cost. He emphasized that the move is both symbolic and practical, merging cultural appreciation with vehicle registration.

Ajrak, a traditional Sindhi block-printed fabric, is widely regarded as a symbol of Sindhi culture and heritage. “By incorporating Ajrak patterns into number plates, we want every vehicle to reflect the beauty, pride, and distinct identity of Sindh,” the governor said. “This will not only spread awareness about our culture but also enhance the visual appeal of our roads.”

According to the governor, the number plates would be designed in collaboration with the Excise and Taxation Department, ensuring that the Ajrak motif meets all legal and visibility standards required for official vehicle registration. Tessori said the proposal had been sent to relevant provincial departments for feedback and feasibility assessment.

The initiative has already sparked interest and appreciation among cultural activists, artists, and members of the public who see the move as a positive gesture toward preserving Sindhi identity in everyday life. Social media has also seen growing support for the proposal, with citizens calling it a creative blend of tradition and governance.

Governor Tessori expressed confidence that the plan would be implemented soon, adding that discussions with stakeholders and regulatory bodies were ongoing. He assured the public that no additional burden would be placed on taxpayers, as funding for the plates would be covered through the Governor House’s discretionary development fund.

The proposal is part of a broader vision by Governor Tessori to bring cultural integration into public services, boost provincial pride, and strengthen Sindh's unique identity at the national level.
