ISLAMABAD: In a move aimed at providing financial relief to the public, the federal government has decided to abolish the Pakistan Television (PTV) fee currently collected through electricity bills.

At present, consumers are charged a PTV fee of Rs 35 per month across various billing categories. This charge will now be discontinued, marking a significant step toward reducing monthly utility expenses for households. With over 40 million electricity users nationwide, this decision is expected to benefit a substantial portion of the population.

The elimination of the PTV fee, which generates around Rs 1.5 billion in revenue every month, is seen as a major shift in the government's approach to ease the financial burden on citizens. An official notification confirming the decision is expected to be issued soon.

In a related development, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) recently approved a decrease of Rs 1.50 per unit in the base electricity tariff. This adjustment is set to bring additional relief to electricity consumers. The new average tariff for power distribution companies has been revised to Rs 34 per unit.

NEPRA has sent its recommendation to the federal government for final approval. The revised tariff will come into effect once the government makes a decision regarding applicable subsidies.

These measures reflect the government’s broader strategy to ease inflationary pressure and support consumers amid rising living costs.
