ISLAMABAD: The federal government has approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army across the country to maintain law and order during the month of Muharram.
A notification issued by the Ministry of Interior confirmed that the deployment comes in response to requests from all provincial governments, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the federal capital. The army will work in coordination with local administrations, providing support based on situational needs throughout the sacred month.
In preparation, the Punjab government has enforced Section 144 across the province from June 27 to July 6, 2025, to address security concerns during Muharram. The restrictions are aimed at ensuring public safety, preserving sectarian harmony, and preventing any disruptive activities during religious observances.
As per the official directive, only pre-approved processions and religious gatherings (majalis) will be permitted during this period. Any new events or changes to existing processions must receive prior clearance from relevant authorities. Furthermore, the public display of weapons and flammable materials is strictly forbidden without official authorization.
The government has also imposed a ban on provocative slogans, gestures, or statements—whether spoken, written, or shared online—that could incite sectarian or communal discord.
Muharram is one of the most revered months in the Islamic calendar. The first day is observed as Youm-e-Umar in remembrance of the martyrdom of Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA). The 10th of Muharram, Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain ibn Ali (RA) and his companions at Karbala.
