ISLAMABAD: In a major move to tackle the ongoing sugar shortage and rising prices, the federal government has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board held on Monday, chaired by Minister for National Food Security, Rana Tanvir Hussain.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Hussain confirmed that all formalities regarding the import process will be finalized within the next few days. “There is a shortage of sugar supply across the country; therefore, immediate steps have been taken to control the shortage,” he said.

The minister emphasized that the decision to import sugar had become inevitable in light of dwindling domestic stocks and rising retail prices. “The imported sugar will be released into the market soon so that consumers can get some relief from the inflationary pressure,” he added.

Industry officials present at the meeting acknowledged that sugar production in the last crushing season fell short of projections, largely due to lower-than-expected sugarcane yields and adverse weather conditions in major producing regions.

According to market observers, sugar prices in retail markets have surged in recent weeks, with reports indicating a 15–20% increase since the beginning of June. The rising prices have added to inflationary concerns and increased pressure on household budgets.

The government hopes that the decision to import half a million tons of sugar will not only ease pressure on local supply chains but also help stabilize prices before the upcoming festive season when sugar demand typically peaks.

Sources in the Ministry of Food Security said tenders for the import would be floated soon, and the private sector may also be allowed to participate under a regulated mechanism. Authorities are also working on ensuring that imported sugar is distributed fairly across provinces and reaches retail markets without delay.

The Sugar Advisory Board will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure price stability and adequate supply in the coming months.
