DUBAI: According to Iran’s Press TV, any decision to shut the Strait of Hormuz in response to recent U.S. airstrikes must be made by the Supreme National Security Council. This follows reports that Iran’s parliament had shown support for the move, though no official legislation has been passed.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which nearly 20% of global oil and gas supplies pass, has frequently been cited by Iran as a potential pressure point in response to Western actions. The current tensions have escalated significantly following overnight U.S. strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities.

Despite earlier claims, there has been no formal confirmation that the Iranian parliament has approved a bill to close the strait. Reports suggest that lawmakers are supportive of the idea, but the ultimate decision lies with the country’s top security authority.

Esmail Kosari, a member of the Iranian parliament’s national security commission, clarified that while there is consensus among lawmakers favoring the closure of the strait as a response measure, the final call will rest with the Supreme National Security Council. This indicates the seriousness of the situation, though a definitive policy move has yet to be made.
