GAZA CITY: More than 50 Palestinians were killed on Monday morning in two Israeli airstrikes targeting a school sheltering displaced people and a residential building in Gaza City and Jabalia, northern Gaza.
The Israeli military reported hitting over 200 targets across the Gaza Strip in the past two days, according to Al Jazeera.
A medical source confirmed that 30 people died after an airstrike hit the Fahmi Al-Jirjawi school in the al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City. The school was serving as a shelter for displaced families. Following the bombing, a fire broke out, engulfing tents and causing further casualties, as reported by Al-Aqsa TV and other local outlets. Eyewitnesses shared distressing videos showing burnt bodies, many of them children, and survivors trapped in the flames.
The Israeli army justified the strike by claiming Hamas used the school as a "command and control center," although no evidence was provided.
In a separate attack in Jabalia town, 19 people were killed when an airstrike destroyed a multi-story building housing displaced individuals, medical sources confirmed. Eyewitnesses described the building as completely destroyed.
The recent surge in violence follows a nearly three-month blockade on humanitarian aid into Gaza, prompting global condemnation.
Gaza’s health ministry reported at least 3,785 deaths since the ceasefire collapsed on March 18, with the total casualties in the conflict reaching over 53,000, mostly civilians. The ongoing Israeli offensive, which began in October 2023, has displaced nearly 90% of Gaza’s 2 million residents, worsening hunger and destruction.
The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes, and Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.
