KARACHI: The crackdown on fancy number plates in Karachi has been temporarily suspended due to adverse weather conditions, officials confirmed on Thursday. The decision was taken to facilitate citizens and avoid unnecessary inconvenience during ongoing rainfall across the city.
According to Pir Muhammad Shah, traffic police personnel will continue to remain deployed on major roads to manage traffic flow and assist commuters. He also conducted visits to different areas to monitor the situation and ensure effective traffic management despite the suspension of the campaign.
Officials stated that the decision to halt the operation was made following directives from Azad Khan, keeping public safety and convenience as top priorities. The DIG emphasized that the objective of the Karachi traffic police is to support citizens, especially during challenging weather conditions.
The campaign against fancy and illegal number plates was launched earlier this week across Karachi. It targeted vehicles and motorcycles displaying unapproved, altered, or fake number plates, which are considered a violation of traffic laws and pose challenges for law enforcement agencies in tracking vehicles.
The operation was being conducted jointly by traffic police, district police, excise authorities, the driving licence branch, and the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee. Authorities aimed to improve vehicle identification, enhance security measures, and curb criminal activities linked to unregistered or disguised vehicles.
Despite the temporary suspension, officials confirmed that all traffic personnel across the city’s 90 sections remain active on roads to manage congestion caused by rain and ensure smooth vehicular movement. Citizens have been advised to follow traffic rules and cooperate with authorities during this period.
The crackdown on fancy number plates in Karachi will resume once weather conditions improve. Authorities reiterated their commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring road safety across the city.
The move highlights the balance between law enforcement and public facilitation, especially during adverse weather, as Karachi continues to face challenges related to traffic management and compliance with vehicle registration laws.
