KARACHI: On Sunday, police in Karachi restricted public access to coastal areas due to hazardous sea conditions caused by high tidal waves. The move comes under the enforcement of Section 144, which prohibits public gatherings and swimming in the sea during the ongoing monsoon season.

Despite the ban, many citizens attempted to reach the beaches, leading to traffic congestion and minor confrontations at entry points, particularly at Sandspit Beach, where police officers blocked vehicles and turned families away. Officials stated that these preventive measures were necessary to protect the public from potential drowning incidents during high tide periods.

The restrictions are expected to remain in place until August 20, as sea conditions remain dangerous due to monsoon activity. Authorities urged the public to comply with safety advisories and avoid visiting coastal areas during this period.

In a related development, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide rain and flood alert. The warning includes a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk for Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kumrat Valley, caused by excessive rainfall and rising temperatures.

The NDMA cautioned about the potential for sudden flash floods, landslides, infrastructure damage, and travel disruptions in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Citizens are advised to stay informed and follow official instructions during this high-risk weather period.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have deployed emergency teams to respond to any emerging threats in both coastal and northern regions.
