ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message on Kashmir Solidarity Day, reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm and principled support for the Kashmiri people and their internationally recognized right to self-determination.

Observed annually on 5 February, Kashmir Solidarity Day reflects the unity of the Pakistani nation and government with the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their ongoing struggle to determine their own future. The prime minister emphasized that the Kashmir issue remains one of the longest unresolved disputes before the United Nations.

He noted that multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions clearly recognize Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory and call for a free and impartial plebiscite to decide its final status in line with the wishes of the Kashmiri people. Despite these commitments, he said, the Kashmiris have been deprived of this right for almost eight decades due to India’s refusal to comply.

The prime minister highlighted that Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir continues to face intense militarization, widespread repression, and serious human rights abuses. Practices such as arbitrary detentions, curbs on political expression, and restrictions on the media have become routine methods to suppress dissent.

Referring to India’s actions of 5 August 2019, he stated that the unilateral and illegal measures taken to alter the legal and demographic character of the region violate the UN Charter, relevant UNSC resolutions, and the Fourth Geneva Convention. He stressed that such actions cannot legitimize occupation or erase the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people.

The prime minister further criticized what he described as ideology-driven policies that promote discrimination, restrict religious freedoms, and silence opposition. He expressed concern over the targeting of mosques and religious institutions, calling it a serious violation of freedom of religion and evidence of systemic bias against the Muslim population.

Despite prolonged suffering and oppression, he said, the people of Kashmir have shown remarkable resilience and determination. Pakistan, he added, pays tribute to their courage and sacrifices.

Reiterating his personal advocacy at international forums, including the UN General Assembly, the prime minister assured Kashmiris that Pakistan will continue to provide moral, diplomatic, and political support until they achieve their right to self-determination through a UN-mandated plebiscite.

Concluding his message, he expressed hope that justice will prevail and that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will one day live in peace, dignity, and freedom.
