KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has launched a large-scale road rehabilitation programme across the city with an estimated cost of Rs5.54 billion, aiming to improve traffic flow, urban mobility and overall city infrastructure. The initiative aligns with the Sindh government’s vision of enhancing connectivity and ensuring safer and smoother travel for Karachi residents.
According to a KMC press release, the road rehabilitation project covers 26 internal roads with a total length of 68 kilometres. These roads play a vital role in linking residential neighbourhoods with commercial hubs and major arteries of Karachi. Thousands of commuters use these routes daily, making them critical for economic activity and public convenience.
On the directives of Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the project has been fast-tracked to ensure timely completion. Tenders for the rehabilitation work have already been floated, and execution has begun on a priority basis to minimise inconvenience to the public and reduce traffic disruptions during construction.
The selected roads are located across multiple districts and towns of Karachi. Key roads included in the project are Olympian Islahuddin Road, Naqash Kazmi Road, Sardar Ali Sabri Road, Sebha Akhtar Road, UP More Road, Peer Bazar Road, Al-Amna Road, Rahmina Road, Sakhi Hassan Street, several roads in North Nazimabad, Badar Chowk Road, ZMC Road, Mission Road, Jinnah Square, Liaquat Market, Khokhrapar Dal Khana Road, Mehran Depot Road and Hashim Raza Road. These roads were chosen based on traffic volume, public usage and their strategic importance in daily commuting.
The total estimated cost of the rehabilitation work stands at Rs5,530 million. The project includes resurfacing damaged roads, improving durability, enhancing drainage systems and ensuring better road safety standards. Officials said the upgrades would significantly reduce travel time and vehicle wear and tear while improving traffic management across the city.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab reaffirmed that improving Karachi’s road infrastructure remains a top priority for the KMC. He said the city administration is focused on delivering visible and sustainable development projects that directly benefit citizens.
“Our goal is to transform Karachi through efficient governance and long-term planning. These road rehabilitation projects are part of our commitment to restoring Karachi as a well-connected, livable and vibrant city,” the mayor said.
The KMC road rehabilitation programme is expected to bring long-term benefits by strengthening Karachi’s infrastructure and supporting economic growth, while improving the daily commuting experience for millions of residents across the metropolis.
