Karachi – The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has successfully restored its social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter) after they were hacked, spreading false information about the port's operations. Despite the hack, the port’s day-to-day activities and operations remained unaffected.
According to KPT officials, the breach led to misleading claims that the port had suffered substantial damage due to an alleged strike by India, which supposedly resulted in significant losses. However, these claims were quickly debunked by the KPT's IT team, who worked swiftly to recover the compromised accounts within just 30 minutes.
To reassure the public and maintain transparency, KPT invited media representatives later in the evening to observe the ongoing cargo handling operations at the port. Journalists were shown that all operations were running smoothly without any signs of disruption or damage to the port’s infrastructure.
On the operational front, KPT reported handling a total of 168,082 tonnes of cargo on the day of the incident. This included 108,856 tonnes of imports and 59,226 tonnes of exports. In addition to cargo handling, eight ships were berthed, and three ships sailed out. The port is expecting nine more ships to arrive in the coming days, carrying a range of goods including containers, general cargo, and ammonium nitrate.
KPT's prompt response to the hacking incident and the continued smooth operations demonstrate the port's resilience and commitment to maintaining its role as a vital hub for trade. The authority emphasized that there had been no impact on its cargo operations, reassuring stakeholders that the port remains secure and fully functional.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by organizations in safeguarding their online presence, and KPT’s swift recovery serves as a positive example of crisis management in the digital age.
