ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Monday said that doctors treating incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan had expressed full satisfaction over his ongoing eye treatment.
Speaking at a lawyers’ ceremony in Ferozewala, Tarar said the former prime minister recently underwent a follow-up medical examination. He stated that one of Khan’s eyes currently has around 70% vision with corrective glasses, while the other maintains normal 6x6 vision.
Addressing concerns raised about certain visual measurements, the minister dismissed worries regarding the so-called “35/25” issue, adding that the medical team had already briefed opposition leaders as well as Imran Khan’s personal physicians.
Tarar’s remarks follow a medical report submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan by Khan’s counsel and the court-appointed amicus curiae, Salman Safdar. The report confirmed that the former premier had been diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a serious eye condition often linked to age and underlying cardiovascular risk factors.
According to the report, Imran Khan — who has been in jail since August 2023 — had complained of losing nearly 85% of vision in his right eye. After the findings surfaced, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and members of his family voiced concern about his health and called for his transfer to a hospital for treatment.
Sources said Khan was examined for about an hour by a panel of five senior doctors, after which the pain in his right eye reportedly reduced significantly. Further improvement is expected as treatment continues, and the medical report has been forwarded to the relevant authorities in compliance with a judicial deadline set for February 16.
A team of specialists from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and Al-Shifa International Hospital also conducted a detailed assessment and expressed satisfaction over his condition, noting visible improvement in his eyesight. Jail authorities have since submitted his complete medical record — including blood pressure, pulse, temperature and blood sugar charts — to the Punjab Home Department.
Meanwhile, political activity around the issue has intensified. Mahmood Khan Achakzai, chief of the Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen Pakistan (TTAP), has reportedly summoned a meeting of MNAs and senators at Parliament House to discuss the future course of protest.
