ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new biometric verification facility based on facial recognition technology, expanding access to identity verification services across Pakistan.
Following amendments to National Identity Card regulations, biometric verification is no longer limited to fingerprints alone. Citizens can now verify their identity through facial recognition using the Pak ID Mobile App. Starting January 20, NADRA registration centres will also begin issuing biometric verification certificates through this system.
According to a NADRA spokesperson, the certificate can be obtained for a small fee whenever required. In cases where fingerprint verification is unsuccessful, applicants will be referred to the nearest NADRA centre for facial recognition verification. Once the process is completed, the biometric verification certificate will be issued.
The certificate will contain the individual’s photograph, CNIC number, name, father’s name, a unique tracking number, and a QR code to ensure authenticity. NADRA has urged both public and private sector organisations to make necessary arrangements to accept and implement this new verification method.
The spokesperson added that after the launch of the Digital ID, facial recognition verification will also be fully accessible through the Pak ID Mobile App.
Separately, NADRA revealed that more than six million citizens used the Pak-ID app to obtain identity documents during 2025, highlighting growing public trust in digital government services and Pakistan’s shift toward digital governance.
