NDMA alerts Punjab, Sindh to intense rainfall, flood risk

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of more rainfall in various parts of the country over the next 24 to 48 hours, urging citizens to remain cautious.

According to the advisory, heavy downpours are likely in upper Punjab, particularly Narowal, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, and Lahore during the next 24 hours. Southern Punjab and parts of Sindh are also expected to experience significant showers under the current weather system. Coastal districts of Sindh, including Badin, Sujawal, and Tharparkar, may receive heavy rainfall as well.

The NDMA cautioned that extremely heavy rains, combined with incoming river flows, have created a heightened risk of flooding. It noted that flood streams from the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers are expected to converge at Head Punjnad on September 4 or 5, potentially leading to an exceptionally high flood situation.

The authority further warned that large volumes of floodwater will flow towards Guddu Barrage in Sindh, raising concerns of inundation. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers and vulnerable areas to minimize risk.
