ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday said it is still awaiting a formal response from Iran regarding its participation in the second round of peace talks with the United States, as diplomatic efforts intensify ahead of the ceasefire deadline.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that Islamabad remains in constant contact with Tehran, but no official confirmation had been received regarding its participation in the proposed talks. He emphasized that a timely decision is crucial, as the two-week ceasefire is set to expire early on April 22.
Pakistan has been actively working to bring both sides back to the negotiating table, positioning itself as a key mediator in the ongoing crisis. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also urged both Washington and Tehran to extend the ceasefire and prioritize dialogue to ensure regional peace and stability.
During a meeting with US diplomat Natalie Baker, Dar reiterated that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward. The United States appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in facilitating communication between the two sides amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in securing a favorable deal with Iran but signaled a hardline stance by ruling out extending the ceasefire. He warned that military action could resume if negotiations fail, further escalating concerns about regional instability.
The first round of direct US-Iran talks, held in Islamabad earlier this month, ended without a breakthrough but maintained a fragile ceasefire. However, recent developments, including accusations of ceasefire violations and increased military activity in the Strait of Hormuz, have complicated the situation.
Tensions have also risen following the seizure of an Iranian vessel by US forces and continued blockades affecting key maritime routes. Iran has questioned Washington’s commitment to diplomacy, citing contradictory signals and alleged violations of agreed terms.
As uncertainty looms over the second round of talks, Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation. The outcome of these efforts could play a crucial role in shaping the future of US-Iran relations and maintaining stability in the region.
