Pakistan endures extreme heat

A severe heatwave continues to grip most parts of Pakistan, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warning of persistently high temperatures across the country. A strong high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is driving the extreme heat, which is expected to last at least until May 20.

Over the past 24 hours, hot and dry weather prevailed across the nation. The most intense heat was recorded in Turbat and Dadu, where temperatures soared to 48°C, followed closely by Dera Ghazi Khan at 47°C. The PMD forecasts that temperatures in northern and central regions—including Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan—will remain 5 to 7°C above average until May 19.

Southern parts of the country, including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, are also facing extreme conditions, with temperatures likely to stay 4 to 6°C above normal until May 20. The hottest days are expected to be Friday and Saturday, with central and southern districts particularly impacted.

Major urban centres such as Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Multan, and Peshawar are forecast to see daily highs ranging from 40°C to 48°C through the weekend. In coastal cities like Karachi, the weather will be both hot and humid. Interior areas such as Dadu and Mohenjo-Daro may even see temperatures exceeding 50°C.

Authorities have issued public health advisories, urging citizens to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, and those with medical conditions—are especially encouraged to take extra precautions.

With the heatwave showing no signs of immediate relief, officials are closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to follow safety guidelines. The PMD will continue to issue updates as conditions develop.
