ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is experiencing a temporary increase in night-time power shortages due to a significant drop in hydropower generation, according to the Ministry of Energy (Power Division). The development has led to enhanced load management measures in several parts of the country, particularly during peak evening hours.
A spokesperson for the Power Division stated that hydropower generation decreased by approximately 1,991 megawatts during night hours. This decline has contributed to an estimated electricity shortfall of around 4,500 megawatts, creating pressure on the national grid and forcing distribution companies to implement additional loadshedding.
Officials explained that the reduction in hydropower output is mainly due to lower water releases from reservoirs, a common issue during certain seasonal periods. Hydropower remains one of the cheapest sources of electricity in Pakistan, and any disruption in its supply significantly impacts the overall energy mix and pricing structure.
As a result of the shortfall, electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) carried out slightly higher-than-announced load management to maintain grid stability. Consumers in various regions reported extended outages during night-time peak hours, highlighting ongoing challenges in the country’s power sector.
The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the situation is temporary and is being closely monitored. Authorities are working to balance supply and demand by optimizing available resources and minimizing reliance on expensive fuel-based power generation, such as furnace oil.
Energy experts note that fluctuations in hydropower generation can have a cascading effect on electricity prices and availability. When low-cost hydel electricity declines, the system often shifts to costlier alternatives, increasing the financial burden on consumers and the government.
The government has reiterated its commitment to improving energy management, investing in water storage infrastructure, and diversifying energy sources to reduce dependency on seasonal hydropower. Long-term reforms in the power sector are also being pursued to ensure a more stable and sustainable electricity supply.
Despite the current challenges, officials remain optimistic that improved water management and better planning will help stabilize hydropower generation in the coming weeks, reducing the need for extended loadshedding and ensuring smoother electricity supply across Pakistan.
