ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has welcomed the historic peace agreement signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House Summit, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a statement on X, called the deal a landmark development that heralds a new era of peace, stability, and cooperation in the South Caucasus—a region long plagued by conflict and human suffering. He congratulated President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan, praising their wisdom and foresight in pursuing a peaceful future. Pakistan, he said, has always stood by its brotherly nation and shares in this proud moment.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the U.S. facilitation under Trump’s leadership, noting that the agreement could unlock opportunities for trade, connectivity, and regional integration, while serving as a model for resolving other prolonged conflicts.
The peace deal, signed Friday, commits Azerbaijan and Armenia to halt hostilities, open diplomatic relations, and respect each other’s territorial integrity. The accord grants the U.S. exclusive development rights to a strategic South Caucasus transit corridor, aimed at boosting energy exports and regional trade. Separate U.S. agreements with each country will expand cooperation in energy, trade, and technology, including artificial intelligence, alongside lifted restrictions on defense cooperation.
The leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia praised Trump’s role, announcing plans to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump highlighted that after 35 years of conflict, the two nations now aim for lasting friendship.
