ISLAMABAD: The federal government has finalized a smart lockdown plan to tackle the ongoing energy crisis in Pakistan, as rising regional tensions continue to disrupt fuel supplies and increase pressure on the country’s energy sector.

According to official sources, the proposed nationwide weekend lockdown is aimed at reducing fuel consumption and stabilizing energy demand. The restrictions are expected to come into effect after formal approval from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The plan recommends enforcing the lockdown from Saturday at 12:00 PM until Sunday at 11:59 PM.

Under the smart lockdown strategy, all markets, shopping centers, and commercial activities will remain closed during the specified period. Wedding ceremonies and large gatherings will also be prohibited as part of efforts to minimize energy usage and manage fuel shortages in Pakistan.

Despite the restrictions, essential services will continue to operate. Hospitals, pharmacies, and other emergency services will remain open to ensure uninterrupted public access. Public transport is also expected to run as usual to facilitate commuters, while ports, railways, and air travel operations will continue without disruption.

Government officials stated that the smart lockdown is part of a broader energy conservation plan designed to address the ongoing fuel crisis in Pakistan. The initiative comes at a time when global oil supply chains are facing uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, impacting petroleum availability and prices.

The move is also aligned with the government’s austerity measures, which aim to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption and redirect resources toward essential sectors. Authorities believe that limiting commercial activity on weekends will significantly cut down energy usage and help manage fuel reserves more effectively.

Experts suggest that the smart lockdown could play a key role in easing pressure on the national grid and reducing reliance on imported fuel. However, concerns remain among business communities regarding the economic impact of weekend closures.

The government is expected to announce further details after the prime minister’s approval, including enforcement mechanisms and monitoring systems to ensure compliance across all provinces.
